![]() And I’m sure someone in the comments will call this something like “positive sexism for women” for “putting women up on a pedestal”. ![]() But it happens often enough to plot a trend from the data points. Yes, I’m speaking in generalities, and that doesn’t necessarily apply to EVERY female villain in comics. And look this one guy that she attacked was a real bad guy who deserved it! Oh, and here’s her giving some of what she stole to poor women in trouble. And she was/is in a relationship with a guy who’s abusive. But she was raped/abused by her when she was growing up. Female villians always have depth, a sad backstory, SOMETHING to justify their villiany.įor example, "Yes, she just robbed a bank and pumped 27 innocent bystanders full of lead. Both companies have male villians who are straight, pure undiluted evil: Red Skull, Joker, Thanos, Darkseid. I've noticed something else too: both Marvel and DC are far more likely to turn villians into anti-heroes if they're women than if they're men. I feel like it would better if instead of turning Quinn from a villainous sidekick into an anti-hero if they had let Harley grow into her own full-fledged Bat-villian. And you know what? I wouldn’t have it any other way. I understand when people want more villainous insane Harley, but I feel like most of that was already explored, and it almost always turned tragic whenever it got attention, and a character caught in a perpetually tragic situation but blind to how bad it is just isn’t very fun, and its why her character has changed over the years into a chaotic antivillain who’s great nemeses are patience and forethought. It means Harley is free to be Harley, and as I mentioned above Harley just isn’t that evil when she’s not being pushed in that direction. Now that does depend on who’s writing Ivy, but PI as a sort of meta-character. That’s part of why her relationship with Ivy is actually very healthy, Ivy is genuinely supportive of her, loving enough to make plenty of time for her, apathetic enough that Harley can come and go without her losing her mind (most of the time), and powerful enough that she doesn’t need or want to manipulate Harley for any reason. She doesn’t actually hang out with that many bad villains, so she doesn’t really get influenced negatively by them. Joker? Evil! Hanging out with the bat family? Less brutal than Jason is (sometimes). The constant of Harley is that she’s influenced by the people around her for good and bad. But on her own when she’s a bit more stable and not being actively manipulated by people, her personality just isn’t evil.įrom a certain standpoint she is, she doesn’t really care about human life in most depictions I’m aware of, but that’s more of an apathetic thing, so it’s up for interpretation. When she was with the joker, that meant mostly evil stuff because he was evil. More or less regardless of which series we’re talking about, she’s not an actively malicious character, she’s just a very chaotic one. Harley just isn’t much of a villain on her own terms.
